May 11th 2024. Primary Boys beaten in Burton Shield Semi Final.

The u11’s faced Sutton Coldfield this morning in the semi final of the Burton Shield at Brookvale and made a very sluggish start considering the importance of the game. The 8.20am start certainly didn't us any favours and without our leading scorer, Rory Butler, we seemed devoid of ideas up front whilst Sutton Coldfield seemed to take full advantage of every clear cut opportunity which came their way to lead 4-0 at the break.Indeed the situation could have been even worse if Lucas hadn't been on top form in our goal and a big improvement would certainly be needed in the second half if we were to stage any sort of fightback. To be fair we had created the odd chance through Theo, who was always looking to set up attacks, but our over reliance on one player was never going to be the sole remedy.

The lads certainly applied themselves much better in the second half, and Zach and Charlie added a little more pace and work rate in the final third although we still squandered any of the fleeting chances which came our way. Indeed we continued to struggle to get any consistency in our pattern of play against opponents who always looked assured on the ball and Sutton eventualy increased their lead to put the game to bed. Their long range effort flew into the top corner, giving Armandas, our second half keeper, no chance and at 5-0 down our whole team understandably looked deflated. The only way was up though and at last Claudiu gave us something to cheer when he turned his marker and found the top corner of the net. Minutes later Theo scored an excellent individual goal with a tremendous left foot finish after picking up the ball in the middle of the pitch but there was insufficient time left for us to save a game that had long ago slipped from our grasp. This was an opportunity missed and Sutton Coldfield must be rubbing their hands with glee after hearing that Erdington & Saltley had beaten the all conquering South Birmingham team on penalties after a 2-2 draw on the adjoing pitch.

Team: Lucas Durnall, Armandas Jolke, Ayo Ogundairo, Joel Badu, Evan Lawrence, Aarav Wilkoo , Theo Wood, Charlie Durnall, Claudiu Flore, Zak Myers.
