A very fast paced tournament was the order of the day at Castle Vale Stadium this weekend. The games, although 9-a-side, were only 10 minutes long so tournament football meant that probably one goal would be enough, and it turned out to be!

We started off proceedings with two 0-0 draws. Our game against Aston, in which we did have a number of chances but unfortunately Elliot was flagged offside for our best. Erdington A were predictably strong and we were on the backfoot for the entire game with Joe making an excellent save with his feet to keep it at 0-0.

Our first win came against Erdington B, where we put the Aston disappointment behind us to play some excellent passing football and after a number of chances, Elliot grabbed our first goal of the tournament to win 1-0. We carried this on during the next game against South Birmingham when some lovely passing allowed Lewis to lift the ball over the goalkeeper’s dive to make it 1-0 to us. Unfortunately for us, we were denied a penalty when Fabio was fouled in the box and South capitalised on our lack of concentration after this incident to nick a 2-1 win. A very disappointing result for the boys.

However, we were determined to be better in the next game and that we were! Telford did go on to win the competition but we played an excellent game against them here to win 2-0. Our first goal was route 1 stuff, when Joe spotted Elliot 1-on-1 with the Telford defender. What followed was nothing short of brilliant when Elliot shimmied his way to a shooting position, arrowing a deadly shot into the bottom corner with a helping hand from the post. A fabulous goal (and he’s scored some brilliant ones this season). With the very last kick of the game, Andre was fouled after a run into the box and he picked himself up to take the penalty to get off the mark for the district. A great win which gave us hope going into the last game.

Our last game was against Sutton Coldfield, who have just reformed after some time away. They had a very inexperienced team and we knew that we had to win to probably come 1st or 2nd and a place in the final would await. We were caught cold when the Sutton winger sprung the offside trap to slot smartly in the bottom corner. A barrage of attacks from us and with the woodwork feeling the effects, it wasn’t to be for us and we lost 1-0 meaning we came in 4th place. A 3rd/4th place play off with South ended 0-0 with no goalmouth action to speak of.

Very proud of the way the boys faced some difficult opposition and some disappointment in decisions made to show strength of character. It will serve the boys well in the future as successful footballers and successful people. Well done boys!
