Wolverhampton’s Under-11 Schoolgirls Representative Team delivered a superb evening of football at Bodymoor Heath in the Inter District Autumn Cup and topped their initial group displaying quality, resilience, and excellent teamwork across their six games.A positive opening performance against Kings Norton, which ended in a 0-0 draw, amply demonstrated our defensive solidity and once Clara had latched on to Harman's well placed corner and found the target in our next match it was clear that there would be no way back for Harborne.A single goal from Clara was once again sufficient to win our third game and on this occasion it was a long-range effort that deceived the Aston goalkeeper to secure the points.
At the half way stage the girls were therefore looking down comfortably on the three sides below them in the table but any complacency was soon swept away when Aston gained revenge with a 3-0 victory once an early opportunity, carved out by Clara and Isla for Willow, had come to nothing. The two goalless draws which followed against Harborne and Kings Norton were sufficient to take us into the semi final as group winners but our inability to convert numerous chances into goals was beginning to become a problem. Despite the hiccup in our return game against Aston, however, Poppy had been rarely troubled in goal and a moment of direct, effective play was all that was necessary to account for Stafford & District in the semi final.Poppy’s long clearance, which was flicked on by Willow, allowing Isla Devlin-Abram to apply a composed finish.
The final against Walsall was well fought but ultimately we conceded a goal and we were never able to find an equaliser. Harman came closest ,firing over early on and and forcing an excellent save late in the match but despite the disppointing result the girls emerged from the evening with so much credit. Our Manager Rob Wilkes, was quick to praise the squad’s outstanding attitude and work rate, describing the night as a “fantastic performance”, and who could disagree with this assessment, for every player played their part, showed great team spirit and made us all so proud!
