Three games, one determined squad, and an evening of excellent football at Bodymoor Heath for the Wolverhampton U11 Girls team. They produced three strong performances to finish the night unbeaten, without conceding a single goal and the marker was set in our opening game against Cannock when Clara drove forward and delivered a dangerous cross across the face of goal that just evaded Olivia at the far post, and Sienna saw her effort brilliantly saved on the line. Cannock responded with a couple of long-range attempts but with Erin confidently commanding her area we were able to put all our energy into attack and it was a little surprising that we were unable to establish a first half lead. The second half was much closer, however, and with neither defence giving an inch the game eventually finished goalless.
Wolverhampton’s attacking play certainly clicked into gear in the next game though against King Norton and Sienna shot us into the lead when she ran on to Clara’s clever through ball and beat the advancing keeper with the outside of her foot. The second goal shortly followed as Harman completed a superb team move involving Olivia and Sienna and the dynamic duo were also instrumental in giving us a 3-0 lead into the break. Olivia’s corner causing problems in the box and Sienna showing great awareness to loop the ball over the goalkeeper. Once again the second half saw fewer chances, but Wolverhampton remained firmly in control and confidently saw out the win.
The goal of the evening, however, arrived within minutes of kick-off against Harborne in our final game when Sienna unleashed a stunning strike from distance that curled beautifully into the top corner. It was simply unstoppable but not content to sit back on our laurels the girls continued to press and Harman was extremely unlucky not to double our advantage after excellent work from Olivia. Despite the pouring rain, Wolverhampton’s work rate never dropped after the break and the second goal arrived when Olivia found the target after a wonderful cross from Sienna. Sienna scored the third herself after showing great determination and composure to win the ball off a defender, and went on to complete the scoring when she was the first to react after Clara’s powerful shot had been parried by the keeper.
Harborne did have their moments but they were unable to seriously trouble our defensive pairing of Willow and Jessica, who were imperious all evening, and with Mila working so hard and pulling the strings in midfield we were quick to relieve any pressure by effortlessly turning defence into attack. Eva and Erin shared the goal-keeping duties between them and it is a credit to both girls that we never looked in danger of conceding a goal all evening and if the team can continue to play like this the league play-offs in March can’t come quick enough!
Squad: Erin, Eva, Mila, Harman, Clara, Olivia, Sienna J, Willow and Jessica .
