It was great to see our youngest district representative players in action at Moreton School and
from the opening whistle it became evident that this friendly encounter against Stafford was going to be played with real enthusiasm, energy and competitiveness. Both teams showed plenty of emerging talent and skill, and I'm sure that the Wolverhampton girls will continue to progress under the careful guidance of our coaches Rob and Pete.
Wolverhampton started brightly and thought they had taken an early lead when Mila fired home a powerful shot but the goal was disallowed as the strike came directly from a kick-in from the sideline and the game remained goalless. Our girls continued to have more of the ball but it was Stafford who eventually broke the deadlock and grabbed the lead. It was slightly against the run of play but it was nevertheless a well-taken effort from close range and it gave our goalkeeper, Eva, no chance.
The Wolverhampton girls responded well, however, and showed real determination to get back into the game. Their pressure was rewarded when Harman found the net to draw the scores level at 1–1 and buoyed by the equaliser they pressed forward and grabbed the winning goal
after a superb run down the right wing by Sienna Johnson. Her low, goal-bound shot was well saved by the Stafford goalkeeper, but the rebound fell kindly to Georgie, who showed excellent composure to control the ball and confidently find the net to seal a 2-1 win. This was a fantastic, competitive game played in the right spirit, with both teams showing impressive determination and commitment throughout and we look forward to seeing this talented group of players continue to develop even further in order to and produce many more enjoyable games in the future.
