Wolverhampton Schools u10 girls produced another excellent performance in this friendly 9v9 fixture against a strong Stafford District Schools side at Moreton School on Wednesday evening. The match was arranged in order to give a number of new players the opportunity to trial for the squad, and every player should be proud of their contribution. Our girls started brightly kicking down the slope and Harman gave us the lead when she was the first to react after Sienna J’s shot had come back off the post. Wolverhampton continued to move the ball confidently and after some excellent play down the left side, Sienna picked up possession centrally and showed great awareness to enable Harman to double her goal tally.
Stafford responded well in the second quarter and reduced the deficit with a close-range finish. Wolverhampton continued to dominate, however, and should probably have converted at least one of their numerous opportunities before Stafford drew level with an impressive strike from distance. Many sides would have started to lose confidence at that point but our girls are made of sterner stuff and retook the lead when Aurora latched on to Harman’s corner and struck a superb shot from outside the area which gave the keeper no chance.
The third quarter belonged to Wolverhampton who continued to attack with confidence and April forced a good save at the near post before Sienna J burst away on the right and fired narrowly over. Mila also tested the goalkeeper with a well-hit left-footed effort and eventually the fourth goal arrived when April reacted quickly to make sure the ball crossed the line after a cross shot had caused havoc in the area. The team then produced the highlight of the game when Sienna J calmly found the net after some lovely play involving Jess, Georgie and April.
In the final quarter, Heidi showed excellent awareness and determination to find the net after closing down a short goal kick to put the icing on the cake but there were so many positives to take from the game apart from the 6-2 margin of victory. The energy, teamwork and determination on show throughout the game was really impressive and it was really encouraging to see several new girls taking their opportunity to impress. A pleasing evening and a lot to be excited about moving forward.
Team: Josie, Jess, Peyton, Sienna S, Edith, Mila, Georgie, Harman, Sienna J. Sophie, April (Woodthorne), Heidi Cadman (Elston Hall) Saraia Sangha (Woodthorne), Aurora Wilson (Rakegate), Phoebe Jones (Perry Hall)
