The Spring League reached its conclusion at Bodymoor Heath this evening with the cup competitions being completed and our Primary Girls warmed up for their semi-final by playing three 15-minute friendlies. Despite the goalless score-line Wolverhampton were the more attacking side in our opener against Harborne, with their goalkeeper having to make several important saves to deny Sienna, Olivia, Mila and Clara, whilst Poppy was a virtual spectator, but in our next game we were beaten by Walsall despite starting brightly. Clara and Olivia created an early chance for Sienna, and Olivia, Sienna and Clara all looked threatening from free kicks but we were unable to find the net whilst our opponents capitalised on their two opportunities.
After Cannock had managed to score the only goal of the game, to win our final friendly encounter before the semi-final, the girls could hardly have been full of confidence but they rose to the challenge to defeat a Harborne team who had only reached this stage of the competition by winning a penalty shoot out against Aston after a 1-1 draw. The decisive moment coming from excellent play on the right by Mila, who delivered a superb cross to the far post where Sienna finished confidently to secure a deserved victory.
The final against Cannock was another closely fought contest with just the one goal again proving decisive. Wolverhampton made the perfect start, scoring early when Sienna converted a precise cross from Mila, and from that point, the team showed the necessary determination and defensive discipline to protect their fragile lead. A fantastic achievement to be crowned Division Two champions and a fitting reward for all their effort, teamwork and resilience throughout the season. A brilliant way to round off the Spring League and the squad can now head into the Easter break on a real high.
Squad: Poppy, Izzy P, Jess, Clara, Mila, Olivia, Sienna J, and Georgie Cole (Woodthorne)
