Wolverhampton entered the Summer tournament consisting of 10 well matched teams with a strong squad and began the evening with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Rugby although we were indebted to an excellent safe from Poppy for maintaining the clean sheet. Olivia had opened the scoring with a direct free kick and Edith sealed the win with the final kick of the game after brilliant work from Mila. Successive 0-0 draws against Harborne and Cannock, proved to be our undoing, however, and the girls eventually finished third in their group after losing 2-0 to Walsall in their final game.
We showed great determination and effort throughout the four games but we were afforded few real scoring opportunities and just missed out on qualification for the semi-finals. We probably went closest to breaking the deadlock against Cannock with Edith’s shot being well saved by their keeper and a flowing move involving Edith and Willow ended with Sienna shooting just wide but it was not to be. Nevertheless, it was another excellent workout for the girls and their determination, quality and excellent team spirit shone throughout the evening with several strong individual performances and encouraging contributions from across the whole squad.
The evening concluded with a friendly fixture against Rugby whilst Walsall faced North Shropshire in the final. Rugby led 1–0 at half-time, after a closely contested opening period, but Edith Rudge scored an impressive equaliser in the second half with a perfectly placed low drive beyond the goalkeeper and that completed the scoring. The match ended 1–1 and provided an excellent conclusion to yet another enjoyable evening of football at Bodymoor Heath.
