November 8th 2024. Primary Girls recover from a disappointing start.

Updated: Nov 13

It was great to see the girls back in Friday night action once again and after losing heavily to an outstanding Leeds outfit over half term this was an excellent opportunity for them to show what they were really capable of. Unfortunately they started rather slowly against Walsall in their opening game and never really recovered from conceding early on.Poppy was unlucky to see the ball rebound into the net after initially making a good save, and Alana was unlucky not to score with one fine effort, but overall our opponents fully deserved their 2-0 victory. The performance against Kings Norton was certainly more encouraging, however, and we fought back well despite going 2-0 down and played some nice football once Alarna had given us hope with a convincing stike.

The third encounter of the evening against South Staffordshire was end to end but we rose to the challenge and it was a case of third time lucky. Poppy was called upon to keep the ball out of goal on more than one ocasion but she was clearly growing in confidence and with Megan and Rosie having good efforts on goal we were looking much more menacing up front. Rosie was extremely unlucky to see a goal bound shot come back off the post but she eventually caused the breakthrough when one of her efforts rebounded to Layla who made no mistake. Clearly buoyed by the elation of scoring Layla doubled her account almost immediately after robbing a defender of the ball and our eventual 2-0 margin of victory was well deserved. It would have been lovely to end the evening in style and the signs were positive early on as we were now playing with such confidence. When a superb free kick from Rosie powered it’s way past the North Staffs keeper it looked like another win was on the cards but a long range effort from our opponents somehow found its way into our net to snatch a 1-1 draw.

Team Poppy Gretton, Aoife Alexsandrowicz, Elyssia Chambers, Megan Winwood, Rosie Smith, Layla Dolman, Alarna Samuels.
