Two matches today and both games provided valuable opportunities for the players to develop their understanding of the game, work together as a team and enjoy representative football. The league game against Harborne opened at a fast pace with both sides showing plenty of enthusiasm and determination but it was Wolverhampton who gradually began to carve out the better opportunities, with the lively Jack Stenson causing lots of problems for our opponents defence through his fine movement and excellent attacking play.
Nevertheless, it was Harborne who created the first real opening with Oliver Cooper Scarisbrook called into action to keep the scores level with a super save with his legs. Our opponents were left to regret that miss because we went on to take the lead through some good midfield play. Ethan winning possession and quickly releasing Jack, enabling him to score with a superb finish.
Wolverhampton didn’t have to wait long to extend their advantage and almost immediately, George found himself in a good position and finished confidently from close range. Even at 2-0 the lads continued to look for more goals and looked likely to add to their total with excellent combination play involving Isaiah, Ethan, Jack and George, whose subsequent effort narrowly missed the target, but eventually had to settle for a two goal margin of victory.
Harborne continued to threaten sporadically, but Oliver was again up to the task making sure he preserved his clean sheet. An encouraging team performance, combining some excellent attacking play with good defensive work and a determined team effort.
The second game, a friendly against South Birmingham, proved to be another closely contested encounter between two evenly matched teams. South Birmingham looked the most threatening in the early stages, however, and struck the crossbar with Oliver looking beaten before our lads settled into the game and began to create opportunities of their own.
George came agonisingly close to opening the scoring with a terrific strike from the right-hand side which crashed against the crossbar and Kaiden produced a good ball through to Jack, only for his effort to narrowly miss the target. In such an evenly contested game, it was clear that one goal would be sufficient to win it and unfortunately South Birmingham eventually edged it with a close-range finish.
Both teams continued to compete for the remainder of the match, but neither side could find another finish despite there being plenty of effort and determination on display.
Squad: Oliver Cooper Scarisbrook, Kaiden, Tommie, Jacob, George, Isaiah, Ethan, Jack and Fraser.
