A Night to Remember at Bodymoor Heath but despite absolutely horrendous weather conditions, the 13 teams who were present produced a fantastic advertisement for girls’ football. The rain fell, the wind howled and the conditions were far from ideal, but the enthusiasm, determination and quality of football on display was quite remarkable.

This was part one of The Autumn League with the final round taking place on Friday 27 November. At the conclusion of the competition, the winners and runners-up of each division will be recognised, with promotion and relegation adding an extra competitive edge. Two teams will be promoted to the Premiership, while two will move into the Championship.

Wolverhampton fully deserved their place in the Premiership and they made an excellent start to their campaign, demonstrating both their quality and determination in an opening 2-0 victory over Rugby. Edith found the net twice to get Wolverhampton off to the perfect start and followed up with another goal as we dismissed Stoke by the same score-line. Sienna Johnson adding        Wolverhampton’s second to maintain an impressive start.

The third fixture was a much tighter affair, with both teams competing fiercely but a well-taken goal from Mila was to prove decisive against North Shropshire, giving Wolverhampton a third successive victory. Our final game brought the toughest challenge of the evening against an unbeaten Cannock & District side and Cannock produced an excellent performance to secure a 2-0 victory, which places them in pole position in the Premiership at the halfway stage.

There are some intriguing storylines emerging after the first four fixtures. Cannock and Kings  Norton lead their respective divisions and remain unbeaten, having both recorded three victories and a draw whilst Wolverhampton and Sutton Coldfield are breathing down their necks, just one point behind after recording three wins from their four matches. This was a terrific return for a Wolverhampton team whose football shone through the storm.

Their attitude was outstanding and not once did they allow the conditions to dampen their enthusiasm preferring to concentrate on their football, encourage each other and give everything for the cause. They can certainly look forward to the concluding evening with plenty of confidence.

A huge thank you is due to everyone who made the evening possible, particularly the B.P.S.FA. and West Midlands Schools FA organisers, the district managers and coaches, match officials and all those who supported the event in extremely difficult weather conditions. We are also grateful to  Aston Villa Football Club for making this fantastic venue available.

Squad: Josie, Peyton, Jessica, Mila, Saraiya, Georgie, Sienna Johnson, Edith,  Heidi, April.
