The Wolverhampton District team kicked off their Autumn League campaign with three exciting fixtures against Kings Norton, Walsall, and Cannock and there were plenty of goals, grit, and great performances across the pitch. The players showed real Wolverhampton spirit and came flying out of the blocks in their first match against Kings Norton , dominating possession and creating early chances. Kings Norton defended bravely but Wolverhampton kept pushing for the breakthrough and Summer went agonisingly close by hitting the post, before skimming the far upright. The goal had to come and with Izzy rock steady in defence, and reading the game so brilliantly, we were able to put all our efforts into attack safe in the knowledge that we could break up any counter-attacks. Nevertheless, it took until very late in the game before we finally got our reward. Harman pouncing on a misplaced pass at the back to coolly seal a deserved victory.

A great start for the team, full of confidence and energy, but game two brought an even greater challenge and with Walsall moving the ball so quickly we found ourselves stretched across the pitch and we went behind to a sharp finish into the corner. A second goal soon followed, but the team refused to back down and Summer led the fightback with a brilliant strike of her own which looked likely to swing the momentum back our way. Izzy was again outstanding at the back, putting in key tackles and showing total composure under pressure but our opponents scored a third with a well-taken header to finally halt our progress. As usual our girls battled to the end, displaying great determination, but on this occasion it wasn't quite enough.

The final game of the opening round was a real end-to-end battle against a strong Cannock side. We started well, with Willow testing the keeper early on and constantly looking for opportunities to press forward, but once our opponents had taken the lead from a scrambled corner we were chasing the game. Cannock added a second with another good finish but the game was still finely balanced and Summer showed we were far from beaten when her powerful free kick forced a top save. She later pulled one back with another brilliant strike to further raise our hopes but time ran out and it was not to be.

Another spirited performance full of teamwork, determination, and quality play against some really strong opponents and plenty to build on. Indeed lots to be excited about for the rest of the season. Summer’s sharp finishing, Harman’s clever play and Izzy’s outstanding defending,

obviously caught the eye but it was the team’s togetherness throughout, that really stood out! Squad: Poppy, Erin, Olivia, Izzy, Harman, Summer, Willow, Mila, Jess, Josie.
