Wolverhampton Schools FA moved away from our familiar venue this week in order to enter two teams for The Birmingham Primary Schools FA Inter-District 5-a-Side Tournament. This provided an opportunity for them to sample a different and exciting football experience but Power League football presents its own unique challenges and it is fair to say both teams struggled at times to adapt.

With rebound boards and netting surrounding each playing area, the ball was constantly in play, creating fast-paced games with very little opportunity to switch off and it was a real test of concentration, awareness and decision-making. Players had to think quickly, react to changing  situations and adapt to a game in which the pace rarely dropped. The smaller playing area also  encouraged quick passing, movement and awareness of space, providing a valuable learning experience for everyone involved.

Both teams worked hard throughout the tournament, but against such strong opposition results were a little disappointing although many of the games were very close. Our only victories being the B teams 3-2 victory against Aston D and the A teams 3-0 win in the all-Wolverhampton fixture.

Our managers were full of praise, however, for the lads commitment and resilience. They supported each other, learned from each game and never allowed their heads to drop. The parents played their part as well and their continued support throughout the tournament, even when things weren’t going as well as we would have hoped, meant a great deal.

A big thank you to Birmingham Primary Schools FA for organising the tournament and providing our players with such a worthwhile experience. The tournament provided an excellent opportunity for them to gain experience in a different format of the game, and the managers hope everyone involved today enjoyed the day as much as they did.
