October 2nd 2026.Promising start for the u11 Girls.
Wolverhampton’s u11 girls took on three strong opponents in another exciting and highly encouraging Friday evening of football at Bodymoor Heath. This was a valuable opportunity to assess the squad ahead of the forthcoming season and we showed great attacking intent in our opening game against Rugby forcing their goalkeeper into a number of excellent saves in the opening ten minutes before Rugby grabbed the lead.
Our girls had moved the ball well and showed real confidence in possession up to that point but once we had fallen behind Rugby showed their class and took a firm hold of the match. Despite the 1-0 defeat there were plenty of encouraging signs, however, and we showed we are more than capable of competing at the top level.
Wolverhampton really embraced the pace and demands of inter-district football in their second game against Aston and Saraiya produced an outstanding defensive display in our 1-0 win. Her blocks, tackles and intelligent passing repeatedly helped us regain possession and she provided the platform for the team to launch attack after attack and the pressure eventually paid off in spectacular fashion.
Sienna Johnson produced one of the moments of the evening with a superb strike from distance which flew into the back of the net to give us a deserved lead and we continued to create chances despite failing to add further goals. Georgie and Phoebe were particularly influential producing some excellent passing from wide areas into dangerous positions and Aston were indebted to their keeper for keeping them in the game.
The girls finished the evening with another impressive performance against Walsall and dominated for large periods of the game without managing to make the breakthrough. At one point, the girls produced a five-minute barrage of attacks, creating opportunity after opportunity, but the Walsall goalkeeper was equal to everything we threw at her. At the other end, Peyton and Sophie made some important defensive contributions, winning the ball back on several occasions and allowing Wolverhampton to build wave after wave of attacks. The girls fully deserved to win but ultimately had to settle for a 0-0 draw.
Overall, a hugely encouraging evening for Wolverhampton’s u11 girls with all 11 players displaying their talent and gaining valuable experience. Another important step in their development and one that leaves plenty of reasons to look forward. There were some excellent individual performances as well ranging from Saraiya, Peyton and Sophie at the back to Georgie and Phoebe's creativity, and Sienna Johnson’s spectacular shooting, at the other end of the pitch.
Squad:
Josie, Jessica, Saraiya, Peyton, Edith, Mila, Georgie, Sophie, Sienna J, Heidi and Phoebe.
