Wolverhampton Schools FA welcomed Leeds Schools FA to Our Lady and St Chad’s on Friday afternoon for friendly fixtures involving our Under 11 boys and girls representative teams. As part of their Autumn tour Leeds were also due to play Birmingham Schools FA on Saturday.

Schools district football in Yorkshire is particularly competitive in Yorkshire with Leeds, York, Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham, all used to playing against quality opposition.

Our boys discovered just how challenging Leeds Schools FA can be, and at times we really struggled against opponents who repeatedly found ways to unlock our defence.

Leeds demonstrated impressive team cohesion, movement and decision-making and their understanding of one another’s game caused us problems throughout the game.

Nevertheless, our team showed plenty of determination and produced some positive moments and Wolverhampton’s first goal was something special. The move began with some excellent work by Jaxxon, who won possession in midfield, before playing his team mate through on goal.

Malachi made no mistake with a well-taken finish but unfortunately the half-time score was 4-1 to Leeds, and the second half followed a similar pattern.

The visitors continued to demonstrate their attacking quality and eventually won the game 8-2 but we did manage to find the net one more time with  Alfie scoring an excellent effort which started as a cross but proved too difficult for the Leeds goalkeeper to keep out.

Yes, the result was a difficult one to take but it was yet another different footballing experience. An opportunity to enjoy a competitive fixture in a slightly different environment at an unusual time of the week and the whole team gave everything in a battle against the odds. Our manager, Jazz Bains, did single out Malachi for his goal and tireless running, however, and Jaxxon and Cairan who were so central to everything that we created that he had to keep them on the pitch for the entirety of the match.
