Wolverhampton Primary girls began their English Schools’ FA National Cup campaign with a visit to Stone Dominoes to play Stafford. The first half finished goalless, but the score-line certainly didn’t tell the whole story because Stafford certainly had the better of the early exchanges and created several excellent scoring opportunities.

Jessica Roberts and Peyton Justin were particularly impressive at the back, communicating well, defending strongly and helping the team to build from defence but even so our team were indebted to goalkeeper Josie Summer, who kept us in the game with a series of outstanding saves, including several from close range. Indeed, her handling was excellent throughout but we did begin to find our rhythm as the half progressed and she was allowed to relax a little.

The Wolverhampton girls produced some dangerous crosses as we finished the opening period strongly and Daya Kaur went close when she raced on to a long ball and managed to get a shot away, only for the Stafford goalkeeper to make an excellent save.

We came out for the second half with renewed energy and immediately began to put Stafford under pressure with Sienna leading the charge and our wide players were particularly effective, winning the ball high up the pitch and helping the team maintain pressure in dangerous areas.

The breakthrough finally arrived when Sienna Johnson found space and unleashed a superb long-range strike which flew into the net and soon afterwards doubled our advantage with another fantastic strike. We were now firmly in control and with our defenders continuing to impress we were able to push forward at will and our third goal was certainly one that will be remembered!

A long ball sent Sienna and Daya racing forward and, when the Stafford goalkeeper spilled the ball, both players were quick to react as the ball bounced off the post and hit a number of legs before Sienna poked it over the line! There was still time for another excellent team goal and it began when Mila Leek produced a superb cross to find Georgie Cole who was arriving unmarked at the far post.

Georgie made no mistake with a calm finish and whilst Stafford continued to battle right to the end there was clearly no way back for them although they did get a deserved goal near the end.

The final whistle confirmed a 4–1 Wolverhampton victory and, most importantly, a place in the next round of the English Schools’ FA National Cup. Plenty to celebrate, but perhaps the most pleasing aspect for managers Kyle and Pete was the contribution made by every member of the squad.

Sienna Johnson was the star of the afternoon with a hat-trick but from Josie’s excellent goalkeeping and the defensive organisation of Jessica and Peyton, through to the energy of the wide players, the attacking threat and the quality of the finishing, this was a genuine team performance.

A winning start to the National Cup campaign – and now Wolverhampton can look forward to the next chapter of what promises to be an exciting cup adventure.
