The Wolverhampton Primary Schools’ Girls representative team got their first taste of action this season ahead of the league competition with a series of friendlies at Aston Villa’s Bodymoor Heath. It was important to start well and after Summer had twice gone close against Walsall, only to be denied by some excellent goalkeeping, Clara finally broke the deadlock with a well-struck finish into the far corner. Summer almost doubled the lead after robbing a defender, while a clever throw-in from Issy set up yet another chance, but despite failing to add to our total we were good value for our 1-0 win. Confidence was therefore high as we kicked off in our second game, this time against Sutton Coldfield, but we had to thank our goalkeeper Erin early on as she made an important save to keep the score level and whilst. Summer burst down the right and crossed for Clara, who fired just wide, neither side could find a breakthrough and both teams eventually settled for a 0-0 draw. This threatened to set a trend because the next game against North Shropshire also ended goalless but as we had gone past the half way stage of the evening we had the satisfaction of knowing we were playing really well and looking rock steady at the back despite having scored just the one goal!
Wolverhampton’s attacking play really clicked against Rugby ,however, and we never looked back once Summer had pounced on a defensive error to calmly slot home the opener. She quickly added a second and then Willow showed great determination to beat a defender and finish low into the net. The two players later combined to enable Summer to complete a fine
hat-trick, with another emphatic finish, and after a 4-0 margin of victory the girls were keen to end the evening on a high. Kings Norton defended reasonably well in the early stages and
Clara's long-range strike was brilliantly tipped on to the post but Summer eventually broke the deadlock.Minutes later Summer was fouled in the box before converting the penalty herself to secure a 2-0 win.
What an excellent start for Wolverhampton. Unbeaten across all five games – winning three and drawing two – without conceding a single goal. Summer was outstanding, scoring the majority of the team’s goals, and leading the attack superbly, but we must not forget that this was a great team performance.Issy marshalled the defence with composure, while Erin’s assured performances in goal ensured Wolverhampton kept five clean sheets but everyone of our players also made their own contribution.A strong and encouraging beginning to what promises to be an exciting season ahead.
Squad: Erin Morgan, Josie Cook, Willow Ranson, Isla Devlin Abrams, Mila Leek, Olivia Wright, Issy Platow, Summer Illsley, Clara Case
