Wolverhampton Schools u14 Girls faced a tough test on Sunday against a strong Wirral Schools side, who have a formidable reputation in schools football. Both teams started cautiously, and the first real opportunity fell to Wirral after 15 minutes, but Bella was able to deal confidently with the shot.

The Wolverhampton girls gradually grew into the game and began to create some excellent opportunities of their own. We competed strongly across the pitch with Ava causing problems down the right-hand. After linking well with Ruby, a good cross found Lara, but her looping effort was well saved by the Wirral goalkeeper.

Skye was next to release Ava with a well-timed pass. Ava showed good strength to hold off her defender before getting a shot away and Amelia later picked out Ava with a good pass, allowing her to use her pace to drive towards goal, but both efforts were eventually saved.

Ava continued to be a threat, and on another occasion, after being released by Ruby, produced a superb effort which looked destined for the top corner only for the Wirral goalkeeper to brilliantly push the ball away for a corner. It was an entertaining, end-to-end contest, with both teams showing quality, commitment and determination but despite further opportunities at both ends it remained  0-0 at the break.

Wirral started the second half strongly and within ten minutes of the restart almost grabbed the lead when they hit the bar with a tremendous effort. The visitors were soon threatening again but Mozza produced some excellent recovery defending, getting back superbly to prevent the Wirral attacker from getting a clear sight of goal. Nevertheless, with the defensive trio of Mozza, Iris and Lois solid throughout and Erica’s ability to break up play in front of them Wolverhampton were still firmly in the game.

Ruby, Delilah and Beau worked really hard in midfield and never stopped running as we launched sporadic attacks of our own but Wirral eventually got the breakthrough. A cross from the right from the edge of the penalty area, creating just enough space for a fantastic left-footed shot into the far top corner. An excellent finish which gave Bella no chance.

Wolverhampton responded positively and almost equalised straight away. Good pressure on the Wirral defence presenting Skye with an opportunity but her effort went just over the crossbar.  Amelia then showed good composure to create space for herself and get another shot away, only  for the Wirral goalkeeper to make yet another impressive save.

Wirral subsequently extended their lead when another cross from the right was turned home from close range by their player arriving at the far post. There was still time for further action at both ends, with Bella called upon to make another good save, while Skye also tested the Wirral goalkeeper with a long-range effort.

In the end a disappointing 2-0 defeat, but plenty of effort, commitment and quality on show from the Wolverhampton girls, who represented their district superbly. They gave everything from the

first kick to the last, created good opportunities, and certainly competed well throughout.

A good team effort with Emilia, Liliana and Daisy all contributing massively when they played. Playing against strong opposition, learning from the challenges presented, and continuing to  improve as a team are all part of the journey. Onwards and upwards!
