The Wolverhampton Schools U15 girls travelled to Slough Schools for their second fixture in the ESFA Champions Cup, looking to build on their impressive start to the competition and played with confidence and attacking intent from the first whistle. They created a number of good opportunities and forced several corners to push the hosts back and Rosie Butler-Hollington came particularly close when her effort struck the post.

Despite dominating much of the early play, Slough capitalised on two breakaway opportunities to establish a 2-0 lead and the Wolverhampton girls could have seen themselves go even further behind if Poppy hadn’t produced an excellent save to keep us in the contest. This save

was to prove pivotal as we grew in confidence as the half progressed and eventually our pressure paid off with Leja Lopetaityte rising high to head home a dangerous corner expertly delivered by Grace Lambert.

This was a just reward for our positive play and there was more to come before the break with Leja reacting quickly to finish off a splendid move which began with Georgia Hambrook’s long throw into the Slough penalty area. The Wolverhampton girls’ magnificent fightback had turned the game on its head and they were  determined to maintain this momentum into the second half.

They pushed for the winning goal and it arrived when Leja latched on to an impressive through ball from Grace Lambert to complete her hat-trick with a composed finish.Slough did respond in the closing stages but Wolverhampton held firm to secure an excellent 3–2 victory and the result was a terrific demonstration of the character, togetherness and never-give-up attitude that the coaches are encouraging within this group. To come from two goals behind away from home and eventually claim all three points is a tremendous achievement.

The coaching team would like to congratulate every member of the squad for this fantastic comeback victory! Their commitment and determination is clear for all to see. The girls were particularly keen to dedicate the victory to Imogen Jones, who was unable to travel with the squad as she recovers from an operation on her back. Everyone at Wolverhampton Schools wishes Imogen a smooth and speedy recovery and hopes to see her back with the team soon.

Wolverhampton’s senior girls’ representative teams continue to provide encouragement, inspiration and a fantastic pathway for younger female footballers across the city and they really demonstrate what representative football can offer — the opportunity to compete, develop, make friendships and, above all, create memories

A big thank you to all the parents for their wonderful support. It is much appreciated. This victory moves Wolverhampton into second place in the group, with another exciting challenge to come when they face Brighton Schools in the next few weeks.
