September 21st 2025. u15 girls go down fighting.

Updated: Sep 24

The Wolverhampton u15 Girls District side faced Sheffield in their opening Champions Cup fixture and put in a spirited and determined performance against a strong team despite ultimately losing 3-0. In truth the score probably flattered the visitors, and didn’t fully reflect the balance of the game, but all three goals came from avoidable mistakes and we really only had ourselves to blame. Indeed, Wolverhampton looked sharp in the early encounters and were probably the better side in the first 20 minutes but once our opponents had scored they began to dominate and they were obviously full of confidence after establishing a 2-0 lead at the break.

Miscommunication and momentary lapses in concentration had proved to be our downfall and as a result Wolverhampton certainly tightened up defensively in the second half. The team also continued to show great resilience and fight and at times the girls showed flashes of real quality in possession and it was great to see how tenacious we were in winning the ball back. Sheffield effectively sealed the points with their third goal but there are still positives we can take from the game. There were standout performances from Xienna and debutant Alice who worked tirelessly at centre half, breaking up play and driving the team forward with real intent and maturity. Both girls were deservedly named joint Players of the Match but Xienna also caught the eye. She was rock steady at the back constantly putting her body on the line and her reading of the game was superb. Indeed all the girls are to be commended for their effort, character, and teamwork and with more time to gel as a squad, the results will surely improve as the season progresses.
