Another fantastic evening of football saw 34 talented girls from Wolverhampton schools come together to develop their skills, improve fitness, strengthen friendships and continue their footballing journey within the Wolverhampton Schools Elite Programme. The evening featured a comprehensive training session led by coaches Rob and Pete, whilst Kyle delivered specialist goalkeeper coaching. Alongside the training programme, Leigh oversaw a pre-season Under-12 fixture against Wyrley Rangers on the adjacent 9-a-side pitch, providing valuable match experience ahead of the new season.
The players worked exceptionally hard throughout the session, displaying excellent attitudes, enthusiasm and a real desire to improve whilst the u12 squad enjoyed an excellent pre-season outing against Wyrley Rangers, proudly wearing their new kits and welcoming several exciting debutants. Demi, Eliza and Millie all made their first appearances, with Millie impressing in goal.
Leigh used this opportunity to test ideas ahead of next season and the squad gave an excellent performance whilst continuing to build relationships and understanding within the team.
The first half was competitive and closely contested, with Wolverhampton enjoying the majority of possession and taking a deserved 2-0 lead into the break. After half-time, the team took total control. however, and produced some outstanding football, building calmly from defence in order to enable the midfield to create numerous attacking opportunities for the strikers and wide players. Their passing, movement and teamwork were particularly impressive and the final 13-0 margin of victory truly reflected a superb all round team performance. Summer scored seven goals and Alarna helped herself to a hat trick of goals but the result was built on a collective effort, with every player contributing to this excellent display.
The evening also highlighted the strength of football development within Wolverhampton Schools through the involvement of two outstanding young match officials. Declan, a fully qualified referee and brother of Amelia, officiated the game with great professionalism, while Aveigh, Leigh’s daughter, excelled in her role as assistant referee. Both are current Wolverhampton School students and talented footballers in their own right. Aveigh is a Wolverhampton Schools' District Player, while Declan was a member of the Aldersley School side crowned Year 10 City Champions this season.Their performances demonstrated the many pathways available within the game and were a credit to themselves and Wolverhampton Schools' football.
Training resumes on Tuesday 24th June, with an Under-11 fixture scheduled immediately after the session. Further details and team selections will be communicated shortly.A huge thank you to all players, parents and supporters for their continued commitment and encouragement, and to coaches Pete, Kyle, Leigh and Rob for their dedication in helping these young players develop both on and off the pitch. The future of girls’ football in Wolverhampton continues to look incredibly bright.
