Wolverhampton started the game brightly and Jaxxon had a couple of early efforts on goal that were well saved by the North Shropshire goalkeeper but both teams looked lively in attack during the opening stages and at the other end we were indebted to Ethan for keeping the scores level. It was a tribute to both sides that the tempo remained high throughout the rest of the half and after Jaxxon and Lucas had both seen shots go just over the bar, and North Shropshire had come even closer only to be denied by the woodwork, the Wolverhampton lads eventually made the breakthrough. It was a fine individual effort that cut through the heart of our opponents defence and the mazy dribble and calm right foot finish gave the advancing keeper no chance.
North Shropshire started the second half strongly, however, and hit back with the equaliser after a long range free kick took a wicked deflection and looped past Ethan who was powerless to reach it. This was a bitter blow to take but before we even had time to gather our thoughts things got even worse and our opponents grabbed the lead following a corner. Wolverhampton responded well, however, and continued to create chances. Bertie produced a strong dribble before getting a shot away that was well saved and Arjan was heavily involved going forward, firing one effort over the bar before delivering a cross for Lucas that again forced their goalkeeper into action. Arjan also tried his luck again shortly afterwards but saw his shot drift just over and even struck the post before a defensive lapse allowed North Shropshire to extend their lead and give our lads a mountain to climb.
The match was seemingly beginning to drift away from us but Wolverhampton continued to play some very good football and were unlucky not to score on more than one occasion. Alfie again hit the post from close range and despite a scramble on the goal line the ball just wouldn’t go in. Arjan also rattled the crossbar as Wolverhampton pushed hard for goals and on another day the match could easily have finished 6–6, but North Shropshire proved more clinical on the day and deserved their 3-1 margin of victory. That is not to say that we should be too despondent and our manager couldn’t praise the team too highly. Ethan , and indeed Stefan who came on in the second half, were confident and composed in goal whilst Leo worked tirelessly to provide the link between defence and attack and Aaran also played an important role in the build-up play by starting attacks from midfield with his excellent passing. Alfie and Arjan was constantly looking to create chances and extremely unlucky not to score and the standard of our passing game was not only exceptionally high today but at times simply mind-blowing.
The lads created plenty of chances that they built up from the back, starting with our keeper with every single player touching the ball and it’s not often at this level that you see 10-pass moves leading to clear-cut goal scoring opportunities. Bertie showed great determination with some strong dribbling runs, Lucas was a constant attacking threat with intelligent runs and Jaxxon started and indeed ended the match with such great attacking intent. Despite the disappointing result this was such an enjoyable game to watch and the results will inevitably begin to turn in our favour if we can continue to play like this.
