April 18th 2026. Heartbreak for the u11 Boys

This was the final appearance of our Wolverhampton’s Boys’ u11 Representative team and the lads were hoping to go out in style by winning The Daniel Sturridge Cup. To do so, however, they knew they would have to top a seven team mini league and they made the best possible start with Thai and Lucas grabbing the goals in a 2-0 opening victory. The lads came flying out of the traps and this was attacking football at its very best. The second game against North Shropshire was much closer, however, and with time running out seemed destined for a 0-0 draw until a fierce shot from Munroe hit the crossbar causing chaos and leaving players scrambling around to shoot or clear the ball. After a series of blocked shot and a few bounces, Hassan slid in to poke the ball over the line to give Wolverhampton their second win and another clean sheet victory.

Wolverhampton dominated much of the third game but some great goalkeeping and defensive blocks from Erdington meant the game ended in a 0-0 stalemate and our first dropped points of the morning. Nevertheless, we were still in an excellent position and we got back to winning ways and consolidated our position at the top of the table with games in hand, after a 2-0 victory over South Birmingham B. Mustapha was our two goal hero on this occasion. He scored the first with an outlandish flick from the outside of his boot, after receiving the ball from Munroe, and reacted quickly to poke the loose ball over the line for his second, to put the game out of our opponents reach.

Our penultimate game was against a Kings Norton side who had beaten us 6-1 a few weeks ago. A defeat which had cost us the league title and the lads were going all out for revenge. The game started in dramatic fashion with Kings Norton being awarded a penalty but once it was missed Wolverhampton began to strut their stuff and take control of the game using Thai and Lucas as outlets with their pace and dribbling. Both keepers had to be at their best as the action went from one end of the pitch to the other but with time running out, Wolverhampton broke and Hassan played a ball to Thai and his cross deflected into the path of Mustapha who fired the ball home in the dying minutes.

Wolverhampton now topped the table with 13 points, three clear of South Birmingham, and our +6 goal difference was also superior to our nearest challenger going into the final game. Everything was set for a dramatic, conclusive final opportunity for our brilliant, memorable, entertaining u11 Wolverhampton boys to win the Cup. The lads started well with Thai and Lucas both firing agonisingly wide. South Birmingham came back with good chances of their own but Wolverhampton contained them with last ditch blocks and tackles before careless communication led to South Birmingham grabbing the lead after Jackson had bravely parried the initial shot. Wolverhampton pressed and hurried to find that equaliser with Corbyn going close on more than one occasion after excellent work from Lucas. One flicked header looking destined for the net only to sail just narrowly over the bar but it was not to be. For all of Wolverhampton’s outstanding effort and high quality football, the 1-0 defeat had left us agonisingly short and we lost out on goals scored, with everything else being equal between the two sides.

Wolverhampton deserved more from this morning of football in the Daniel Sturridge Cup but football is a game of fine margins. The lads showed positivity throughout and delivered thrills galore whilst producing some lovely football at times and to finish second is certainly no disgrace. Mustapha finished as our player of the tournament for his 3 goals and his quality to produce when it really mattered but Coaches Eddy and Kyle were delighted with the performances of the whole team. A squad capable of keeping five clean sheets in six games whilst also possessing the quality to deliver in big moments as they did in those matches against Kings Norton and North Shropshire.

Squad: Jackson, Charlie, Noah, Zora,Thai, Lucas , Hassan, Duarte, Munroe, Fabian, Corbyn,

Mustapha.

A huge thank you to all of the u11 parents and guardians for their commitment and support over the two years of district football for this group leaving them with plenty of medals and memories of league wins, cup wins and tournaments that were so nearly won. Always challenging for honours whilst producing high quality and entertaining football at Aston Villa each weekend. Thanks for the memories.
