Wolverhampton Schools FA u14 Girls capped off their fine season in outstanding style with a deserved victory over a formidable Sefton side at the home of AFC Wolverhampton. Our visitors have qualified for The National Cup Final, which will be played at Stoke City next month, but from the outset it was the Wolverhampton girls who seized the initiative as a result of their disciplined, determined, and united performance and they worked tirelessly for one another, pressed well and made it so difficult for our highly rated opponents to dictate play.
The decisive moment came in fine fashion. A perfectly timed through ball from Imogen Jones released Leja Lopetataite, who showed great composure to round the goalkeeper before finishing confidently from a tight angle to give Wolverhampton the lead and it was now clear that Sefton’s previously unbeaten record was seriously at risk. From that point the visitors threw everything at us but our girls held firm and produced an outstanding resilient display of real teamwork. Every player played their part as we supported each other, and defended with great determination in order to ensure that narrow advantage remained intact until the final whistle.
Our manager, Rich Halford, described the performance as “absolutely brilliant” and highlighted the significance of overcoming a previously unbeaten side who had exhibited so much quality. He also thanked the parents for their unwavering support across the season and emphasised that our strong team spirit is down to the fact that every squad member, both on and off the pitch, always put the good of the team first. Sentiments echoed by our assistant manager, and Jas also praised the players work rate and commitment which is always evident. He also reflected on a strong run of recent performances and expressed optimism heading into next season.
This victory not only demonstrates the quality within the Wolverhampton squad but also reflects the values and culture being built around the team and it was heartening that many Sefton parents were impressed not just with the football but also by the welcoming and supportive atmosphere which had surrounded the game- something they hadn’t always experienced elsewhere.
They also highlighted the fact that the positive spirit shown by players, coaches, and parents alike, had all contributed to making the evening such an enjoyable, respectful and memorable occasion. By finishing the season on such a high, both in performance and sportsmanship, the u14 Girls can now look ahead to next season with great confidence and pride.
