From the outset, this was a closely contested encounter with Kings Norton but Wolverhampton created the first clear opportunity when Mustafa volleyed a dangerous cross across the face of goal. Corban did well to get his head to the ball, but it was just too high for him to direct it on target and we had cause to rue this missed opportunity when our opponents finally broke the deadlock with superb effort into the top orner of the net which gave Jakson no chance. We responded positively, however, with Mustafa forcing an excellent save from the Kings Norton goalkeeper, who just managed to push the ball around the post and from the resulting corner, we came agonisingly close to an equaliser as Lucas’ delivery came back off the post and rebounded to safety. Nevertheless Wolverhampton still found themselves trailing by a single goal at the interval, despite there being so little to separate the two sides overall.
Wolverhampton exerted early pressure after the break but we had a tendency to be wasteful in possession and became increasing frustrated when a host of promising attacks came to nothing.
On the other hand Kings Norton bided their time and extended their lead once the ball rebounded kindly for one of their forwards after Jakson had done well to make the initial save. Fabian made a well-timed run from midfield to create a scoring opportunity, as we pushed forward in an attempt to mount an immediate response and Lucas continued to be a constant threat down the right with his direct forward runs and we eventually pulled a goal back when his excellent cross found Thai who finished confidently.
Any momentum gained was short-lived, however, as Kings Norton struck again with a goal at the far post to restore their two-goal advantage. The goal of the game came from Hassan, however, who produced a determined run out of defence before unleashing an unstoppable long-range shot that flew past the helpless goalkeeper. Our lads then went all out for a late equaliser but ultimately ran out of time. Lucas’ outstanding performance did not go unnoticed, earning praise from the Kings Norton coach for the continual problems he caused their defenders and he was deservedly named as Wolverhampton’s Player of the Match.
Squad: Jakson, Zora, Hassan, Charlie, Duarte, Fabian, Thai, Lucas, Corban, Mustafa, Monroe.
