Wolverhampton were caught cold against South Birmingham, falling 4–0 behind inside the first half with a mixture of unforced defensive mistakes and a series of slick, well-worked South Birmingham moves all contributing to our downfall. Just when it appeared that Wolverhampton were dead and buried, however, a moment of brilliance offered up a brief lifeline and clearly lifted our spirits. Lucas meeting a dropping ball with such accuracy that his superbly struck volley gave the keeper no chance. Unfortunately the momentum shift was short-lived and South Birmingham quickly reasserted control, adding a fifth before the interval to restore their four-goal cushion sending Wolverhampton into the break stunned and searching for a response.
To their credit, the Wolverhampton lads noticeably improved in the second half and they threw caution to the wind in an effort to reduce the deficit. Jackson was required to produce multiple excellent saves, as we pushed forward at every opportunity but Thai and Corbyn were posing far more problems for our opponents defence and the team generally were able to carve out some promising passages of play. Despite our best efforts, however, we were never able to replicate the visitors’ ruthless finishing and composure in the final third and were unable to add to our goal tally. Nevertheless, we could not be faulted for effort and there are clear positives to take forward—not least the spirit shown in the second half and the individual performances that underline the team’s character. Mustafa in partucular stood out for his relentless work rate and determination as he battled tirelessly in midfield, winning challenge after challenge. He continually tried to spark something for his side In a very difficult match and deservedly won the player of the match award for his energy, effort, and resilience.
