The Under 12s entertained East Riding in this Champions Cup fixture and for long periods there was so little to separate the two sides that our management team of Leigh and Rob could see strong evidence that our girls are making real progress across the pitch. Despite putting together some excellent passages of play, and moving the ball really well through midfield, however, we were never able to capitalise on opportunities which came our way whilst our opponents were fortunate to possess a player who could finish with clinical efficiency whenever she was able to utilise her speed and excellent dribbling ability to break through our defence. All three opposition goals came from this player, and at the end of the day her goals proved to be the difference between the two teams.
This is not a criticism of our defence because to their credit, every one of our players worked hard, gave a very good account of themselves and enabled us to defend collectively as a team whenever East Riding threatened to run rampant. Izzy Platow though shone brightest through the gloom and she was outstanding once again. Despite her age she is developing into a real talent and she was arguably Wolves’ best performer on the day although our keeper was not very far behind. Kairi, despite being splattered with mud, was fearless and committed between the sticks and no-one could deny that she hadn't delivered a superb display in goal.
The introduction of Rosie in the second half made a significant difference to our attacking threat because she was strong in the dribble and confident when carrying the ball forward. She was able to impact the game and posed a constant threat. The tactical switch to two up front and three in midfield proved to be really effective, and this formation also brought the best out of Izzy and Clara and Olivia also impressed on the right side of midfield producing one of her strongest performances in that position. Megan and Alarna showed some neat passing movements as the match progressed to help build some promising attacks but we were restricted to just the one goal which came after some excellent link-up play involving Willow. Izzy latched on to the ball and confidently gave the keeper no chance. A fitting reward for a lively, positive, performance while deputising up front and on the wing.
The team showed resilience, teamwork, and plenty of promising football throughout and despite losing 3-1 the girls shouldn't be too disheartened because there is so much to build on going forward. We have an excellent nucleus of players and if we are able to supplement them with Kysha in defence, Summer up front, and Rosie on a regular basis , then the signs are excellent. Finally, a word for referee Jack, who officiated superbly, having come straight from a Wolves Academy game and it is heartening to discover that he has offered to help us out in the future.
