Despite a blustery forecast and swirling winds, both Wolverhampton and Swindon served up an absolute thriller of a match full of goals, drama, and brilliant football from start to finish! The wind may have been howling, but the first half was marked by wonder goals and early drama and we signalled our intentions from the kick off. Wolverhampton’s lively forward Mustafa was certainly on fire and once his early strike had seemed destined for the bottom corner, until the Swindon goalkeeper had somehow pulled off a stunning full-length diving save to tip it wide, and Fabian had fired just over from the resulting corner, our visitors should surely have heeded this early warning. After fifteen minutes Wolverhampton did make their pressure count when a loose clearance from the Swindon keeper enabled Mustafa to give us a 1-0 lead. Swindon weren’t going to roll over though but Jakson was as solid as ever between the sticks and on the one occasion he seemed to be in a spot of difficulty Ollie came to the rescue with a brilliant tackle to deny a certain goal.Everything seemed to be going well, perhaps too well, and Swindon’s persistence finally paid off. A looping ball into the box was met with a spectacular overhead kick that flew into the net for the equaliser and moments later Swindon were amazingly ahead with a rocket of a shot into the top corner from the left wing.
2-1 down at the break Wolverhampton came out determined to reassert their control and a quick intelligent throw from Charlie to Hassan provided an opening.Mustafa received the ball, and despite being surrounded by defenders, he somehow created the half a yard of space to tie the score at 2-2. Just as Wolves were building momentum, however, Swindon regained the lead with a looping cross-shot that deceived Jakson and dropped into the net and we were once again chasing the game. The boys in gold didn’t give up for one second and with Mustafa rattling the post, and Hassan and Duarte both going close, it seemed only a matter of time before Wolverhampton would conjure up another goal. Swindon’s defence was certainly under siege, but not only did they hold on but they incredibly extended their advantage and we allowed them to do so through a lapse in concentration. We couldn't say we weren't warned though because minutes earlier only Monroe’s incredible tracking run had stopped a previous counter attack in its tracks!
At this point many teams would have ’dropped their heads but not the 'come back kings' and straight from kick-off, Mustafa pressed high, robbed a defender, and hammered the ball home from a tight angle. Just one more goal to find now and as the pressure mounted once again, Duarte delivered the moment the crowd had been waiting for. Cutting in from the right, he unleashed a left-footed strike that fizzed into the net. 4–4 but we weren't going to sit back and just settle for a draw! Wolverhampton pushed really hard for that winner in the closing minutes, but Swindon held firm and as the final whistle blew, both teams could hold their heads high after an eight-goal classic that had everything — skill, passion, and non-stop action! What a game! A 4–4 draw that felt like a win for the fans. Both sides played some brilliant football despite the wild weather and Wolverhampton showed massive character to keep coming back.
So much to praise. Mustafa our Hat-trick hero and constant threat up front. Another assured performance by Charlie at the centre of defence providing great cover for Jakson whose safe .hands and brave saves in such testing conditions was incredible. Duarte's crucial equaliser and tireless running. Ollie & Monroe who together provided rock solid defensive blocks that kept us in the game at key moments and lets not forget Lucas, Hassan , Fabien and Zora who also played their part in a super team performance.
Squad:Jakson, Ollie, Charlie, Monroe, Hassan, Lucas, Mustafa, Fabien, Zora, Duarte.
