Wolverhampton and Harborne served up a thrilling match, full of quality football, sharp passing, brave tackles, impressive saves, and certainly no shortage of goals but this game was to feature one of the most outstanding debuts in our long history. Few can surely have made the impact that Cairan Khunkhuna produced as he announced his arrival with a superb hat trick. The first of these goals, which brought us level after we had conceded an early penalty, was a great strike from distance but the second which gave us a 2-1 lead at the break showed more of a poacher's instinct as he reacted the quickest to follow up Mohammed’s shot, which the goalkeeper couldn’t hold. Furthermore his work rate was immense and on one occasion he even raced the whole length of the pitch before clearing the ball off his own goal line!
Cairan completed his hat-trick early in the second half with a tidy left-footed finish and even when Harborne were able to reduce the arrears he was instrumental in re-establishing our two goal advantage once again. This time driving forward to unbalance the Harborne defence before slipping a perfect pass through to Arjan, who finished clinically for 4–2. With key defender Austin unavailable, Wolverhampton were grateful to Jaxxon for stepping in at the back and at that point no-one could have predicted that we could possibly go on to lose the match because Jaxxon was reading the game so well, and showing real confidence in playing the ball out from the back, whilst our defensive shape generally looked so sound.
Harborne weren’t finished, though, and pulled another goal back but Arjan's second goal of the match to restore a two-goal cushion at 5–3 looked to have secured the win before an inexplicable collapse saw Harborne score three late goals to turn the match on its head. Our team, peppered with some outstanding individual contributions, had produced a performance full of effort and quality, and yet inexplicably lost the match 6-5. You just couldn't make it up!
Team: Stefan, George, Jaxxon, Dilroop, Arjan, Mohammed, Cairan, Alessandro.
