Wolverhampton SFA u15 girls team produced an excellent, spirited performance in this Fiday evening encounter on Merseyside in their opening ESFA National Champions Cup fixture of the season. To face such a strong side as Liverpool without Xienna, Lexi, Phoebe, Harmani and Vakare who have all been selected to play for the West Midlands County Schools squad, was certainly daunting but the girls seemed unfazed and started the match brightly. Indeed we
created several good chances in the opening stages and put Liverpool under early pressure only to see the home side gradually take control once they had scored the first goal. Two of the three goals they scored in the first half had more than a hint of offside about them but Liverpool can hardly be blamed for taking the opportunities which came their way and their finishing was extremely clinical. To their credit, the Wolverhampton players kept their composure and continued to show determination and resilience throughout and their persistence was rewarded in the second half.
Erin produced a moment of real quality from a free kick wide on the left and her powerful effort beat the Liverpool goalkeeper at the near post to give us hope and moments later we were firmly back in the game. A period of sustained high pressing forcing the error at the back which allowed us to seize possession and fire the ball home. Despite being 3-2 down Wolverhampton now had momentum on their side and pushed really hard for the equaliser coming agonisingly close on several occasions. Unfortunately, Liverpool grabbed a fourth goal late on as we committed more and more players forward to secure a 4–2 win but whilst the result didn’t go their way, the girls’ attitude, teamwork and fighting spirit was outstanding.
Erin and Dhemi impressed throughout the evening but there were so many proud displays worthy of mention. Caitlin and Lexi caught the eye at times with their performance and Remi was certainly back to her best but Kornelia took the plaudits once again with a series of super close range reaction saves and some high quality handling. ‘Nela’ has been our Number 1 for four years now and not surprisingly the opposition managers selected her as our player of the match. Wolverhampton return to action with a home fixture against Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Schools. Looking forward to the next challenge!
Squad: Kornelia, Caitlin, Remi, Alice, Xienna, Sarannah, Erin, Savannah, Lexi Ruby, Dhemi, Khalia
